Assistant Principal's Report
As you may aware our school is focusing on Mathematics this year. One strategy we use is called Newman’s Prompts to assist student’s to solve problems using words.
To solve Maths problems there is a lot more to it than just solving the numbers. Students need to be able to understand the problem. When solving worded problems, we ask children to firstly comprehend what the question is asking of them. They have to understand the language and use the appropriate mathematical strategy (processing) so they can finally check that they have answered the question properly.
Teachers at St Johns are working with our students to give them the tools to solve
mathematical problems. Newman’s Prompts is one of many tools that out teachers are using to support and deepen our students mathematical fluency.
Over the coming weeks we will look more closely at how we can teach maths at our school to improve the student’s understanding of important Maths concepts.
