Learning Intentions and Success Criteria at St  John’s

Learning.png

At St John’s and across our system of schools, research into educational reform by researcher Lyn Sharratt underpins our practices for improvement in learning.

When the lesson content is made clear, children are able to take greater responsibility for their own learning. They have more ownership and understanding of the purpose for the learning.

At St John’s we begin every lesson in reading, writing and Maths with a Learning Intention. The learning intention enables the students to have a clear understanding from the very beginning what they are going to be learning in the lesson and why.

Walk into any of our classrooms and you will find the success criteria for the lesson is also clearly demonstrated. The success criteria includes the elements of the learning that the students will be able to demonstrate to show they have been successful. The idea is that if the children can see what they’re doing and why, it’s going to be of more value to them and can help them achieve.

Ask your child-

What was the Learning Intention today in English?

What is the success criteria that you are using to help you with writing?

How do you use the Success Criteria to know how you are going?

Where do you go for help?
