Dear parents and carers,
Jesus replied: ’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ (Matthew 22:37)
Brother Damien Price poses a question: “Can you leave what is urgent and attend to what is important?” He reminds us that our world is constantly telling us that this phone call, that email, this text message, that meeting, this party, that commitment and that job are all so urgent and we must attend to them. In the rush to do these ‘urgent’ things, we can forget the ‘important,’ necessary and life-giving things - patting your dog, hugging your children, hugging your parents, laughing at yourself, cracking a joke at the dinner table, enjoying a sunset, or realising what great friends you have.
Something is important if it fits into what Br Damien calls ‘the Jesus file’ : “You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart and soul and mind, and you must love your neighbour as yourself.” What is really important is to do with love – of God, of neighbour and of self. I hope that with the upcoming student vacation you get some time to attend to the important ‘Jesus file’ things!
With our term coming to an end this week, I would like to pass on my thanks for your continued support. Grandparent’s Day and the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the first Mass said in Campbelltown were two highlights for our community, and demonstrated what can be achieved when members of our community.
I hope your children have a relaxing and safe holiday break. They continue to be a source of great joy at St John’s with their enthusiasm for learning and care they show their friends. Their health and well-being, as well as that of the staff, continues to be at the forefront of our daily operations. While there are fewer cases of COVID, we are still seeing staff and students suffering from other varieties of cold and flu. Hopefully this will shift with the warmer weather.
P & F Movie Night
Thank you to the families who supported this fundraising initiative on Monday night. Our school has begun some planning to improve the playground and the things that students can do during playtime. Much of this will involve the purchase of new equipment and possible capital works in 2023, and the P & F has indicated a willingness to support this. Fundraising initiatives like the Movie Night contribute significantly to this support.
Staff Development Day
The next Staff Development Day will be held on Friday 14 October. Please note that this will be a Pupil Free Day.
Wishing you all a happy and safe fortnight. We look forward to seeing you in Term 4,
Paul Moroney
Principal
MAPLE COMPLETES HER FIRST TERM AT ST JOHN’S
Maple has certainly made an impact at St John’s. She completed her work for this term last week and will resume in the second week back in Term 4. This term she has worked two days a week. The plan is to increase that to three and perhaps four days a week before the end of the year.
Congratulations to all the students in following the three expectations clearly outlined to support Maple’s integration into the school community. These expectations will remain but over time there will be greater opportunity for students to interact with her.
Below are some responses by students about how they feel having our well being dog, Maple, at our school.

The Dogs Connect Program has been featured on 9 News, Sky News, 7 News, ABC News, Australian Teacher Magazine and The Border Mail. Maple Has 21 water bowls around the school for drinks when she goes on walks. Overall a Maple is an amazing part of St Johns and she’s improved our lives ever since.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA EXCURSION
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the Year 6 students went on an excursion overnight to Canberra on 12-13 September. Below is an insight into their experience written by Laken Houston and Khrish Hagarty:
Last week on Monday and Tuesday Year 6 went on an overnight excursion to the ACT, Canberra.
With a very tight schedule everyone seemed to enjoy the time that they spent in important places to Australian people. At most places they were displaying paintings and objects in memory and mourning of the Queen.
When Year 6 visited the Australian National Museum they deepened their understanding of Australian history.
They took part in voting and witnessed the process of counting the votes at the AEC.
At the War memorial they saw the Wall of Honour and learnt how dreadful the wars were.
With a turn of events Year 6 was able to see the Royal Mint of Australia, with the main theme being the prehistoric time of the creatures that lived within Australia.
The Australian Institute of Sport was an awesome place for them to enjoy some time to play sports and use some Olympic training machines that athletes use.
The most memorable place out of all of them was Parliament House, the students learned the seating areas of both rooms including the Senate and House of Representatives. Students learned nearly everything that there is to know about the Senate and House of Representatives.
The students would like to thank the staff and people who organised the overnight excursion to ACT.
UNIFORM FOCUS- HOUSE COLOUR COMPETITION
Each week students are reminded about the uniform focus area. This is in alignment with our school uniform policy. During the week teachers check to make sure that students in their class are following that particular focus on uniform. If they are wearing the correct uniform on a certain day that week, teachers provide students with a token for their House Colour. This token is then placed into the canister outside the Community Room.
Yesterday, some of the Year 6 House Captains counted the tokens collected in the canisters. The tokens were placed out in rows of ten so they could be counted easily and it could be checked by others for accuracy.
As you are aware, Polding House (Blue) had the most number of tokens. If your child was away today, they will still be given an opportunity to wear mufti and have their zooper dooper this Friday. Below are the results.
