Creator God,
How extraordinary is Your “ordinary time.” How uncommon is the commonplace in Your Kingdom. The mundane is made miraculous, full of holy opportunities.
The smallest joy a jubilee.
We humbly ask that You continue to bless us with all we need for the living of these days—these wondrous ordinary days—that our everyday lives may be gifted to experience the vitality of Christian community, to share Your message of hope, reaching out to the poor and hurting, and bringing glory and honour to You, our God.
Amen
Dear Parents/Carers,
I trust that the extra days of the recent long weekend gave your family an opportunity to engage in some quality connections with one another. It is apparent at school that there are a variety of winter illnesses being spread amongst students and staff. Hopefully your family is staying safe and well during this time.
The prayer that I have included above speaks of 'ordinary time' and asks God to bless us with what we need to use this time well. In liturgical terms, 'ordinary time' is that period of weeks in which the church is putting its energy into the many stories of Jesus that sit outside the significant events of Christmas and Easter. As we know, these stories are rich with messages for how we can best serve God and be in relationship with Him, by being in relationship with others. The times of Christmas and Easter help us focus on specific aspects of the divinity of Jesus; however, Ordinary Time allows us to also see the humanity of Jesus in a way which connects with our ordinary days.
In the secular world, too, we can see the 'ordinary times' of life as, on the face of it, not being of significance. It is the big events or celebrations that sometimes capture the headlines, the most resourcing or have greater perceived value added to them. However, all of us spend more time in the 'ordinariness of life' and so it is important that we see this as of great significance. I heard a football coach interviewed recently who commented on the importance they place on their team in focussing on every game each week, rather than be looking too far ahead to finals games. We hear statements like that a lot, and when we stop and think about it, if a team gets it right week in, week out, then they have a better chance of being able to participate in any championship games.
I pray that the 'ordinary times' of your life are gifted with many blessings, no matter how seemingly small. At school, we value strongly value the little, everyday things that happen with our students to support their growth in faith, learning and wellbeing. It will be the accumulation of these 'small' blessings that will bring to fruition life-giving connections with those who are most important, and bring the joy of the Gospel to ourselves and others.
Wishing you a safe and blessed week,
ONLINE SCREEN TIME
It is crucial that our children achieve a healthy balance in their online and offline activities. The link below is for parents and carers, covering online time in general. Parents can also read information about online gaming.
Targeted advice on managing online time is available for young people.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING SPACES
Another reminder that the Accessible Parking Spaces is only for those who have a parking permit for that space. There have been some parents and carers who have parked in these spaces during school dismissal. We would ask that these spots be left available for those members of the community who really need them who have the appropriate permit visible. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
STUDENTS ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL
We understand the challenges that come with getting students ready for school and ensuring they arrive on time. However, we'd like to emphasise the importance of punctuality, as it plays a significant role in your child's education and overall well-being. There were 85 students who were late to school last Thursday.
Children can be brought to school between 8:15am-8:45am. The school gates close a couple of minutes after 8:45am.
We kindly request your support in ensuring that your child arrives at school on time. We understand that unforeseen circumstances can lead to occasional lateness, but regular tardiness can disrupt the learning environment for all students.
We believe that a strong partnership between parents, carers, and the school is essential for the success of our students. By working together, we can ensure that your child receives the best education possible.
If you have any questions or need assistance in promoting punctuality, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to support you and your child.
EMBEDDING OUR SCHOOL VISION & MISSION WITH STUDENTS
Last Friday we held our Staff Development Day. The theme of the day was to develop a shared understanding of our school's Vision and Mission and how we can work together to animate it for ourselves and students.
Our commitment to fostering an environment of ‘Walking in peace and joy’ is paramount. We will begin to unpack this with students over the coming weeks.
We will strive to instill in our students the importance of kindness in their daily interactions. Through both actions and words, we will encourage everyone to practise empathy, understanding and respect. We want our school to promote kindness, creating a happy and safe learning environment for all.
Students K-6 will have the opportunity to be involved in ‘Choosing Kind’ workshops:
For ME
With YOU
Connecting US
The workshops will be facilitated by Cameron Brown. He is the founder and lead facilitator of Explore Discover Act and led leadership workshops with our Year 5 students in previous years.
This well-being experience will benefit the students with their overall connections while strengthening their empathy and compassion for others. The aim is to assist students embed our school motto of ‘Walking in peace and joy’. We look forward to hearing about the impact of these workshops and sustaining a shared understanding of our Vision & Mission. Stage 3 will participate in the workshop tomorrow.

Disco Information and Instructions for Parents
Younger Kids Disco vs Older Kids Disco
We have received feedback in the past that due to their age and size that Yr 3 children might feel a bit intimidated surrounded by much larger older children. They may also enjoy the music tailored to the younger crowd. For the first time this year, we are allowing Yr 3 to choose which disco they would prefer to go to.
Younger Kids Disco is for Kindergarten up to Yr 3 kids. Doors open at 6:15pm for drop off and opens again at 7:30pm for pick-up. Older Kids Disco is for Yr 3 to Yr 6 kids. Doors open at 7:45pm for drop off and opens again at 9pm for pick-up.
Yr 3 can only go to one disco. We will refuse entry to a second disco. It is advised that Yr 3 kids agree with their friends before hand which disco they will be attending.
The disco is for St John students only. No parents or siblings will be allowed on the premises (even if you show us a WWC). Only pre-registered volunteers for this specific event will be allowed on the premises.
Teachers are received an invitation to attend the discos to support their students if they wish to and the P&F are supported by Mr Moroney and Mr Williams during both events.
There is always a first aid certified adult in attendance at our discos.
Drop Off procedure
Novelty Lights Stall: There is a novelty lights stall available for children to purchase novelty items such as glow sticks and glasses. Please visit this stall before heading to registration.
Registration: Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for registration. There will be 3 lines for the child’s class colour. I.e. if your child in in K Blue, you will need to line up behind the blue table. Be ready to provide class and name to be marked off.
Payment: Pre payment for the tickets is available via Trybooking at https://www.trybooking.com/CSLPP
After registration you will then be invited to form two lines at the next table. There will only be one line accepting EFTPOS payments. If you are paying by EFTPOS please join this line. When the doors open, your payment will be taken and you will drop off your child at the external door. No parents will be allowed through the door into the foyer. Promptly leave via the exit route so you do not block the path and prevent other children trying to enter the disco. See map diagram to visualize this route.
Canteen
Once inside, children have access to a canteen where they can purchase drinks and snacks. Please give your child cash for them to purchase what they like. A price list of what will be available will be posted on Compass before the event.
Inclusivity/ Disability Support
If your child requires other accommodations, please contact us prior to the event to ensure we can adequately support. Please do not leave this to the day of the event as we would like to get all children into the hall as efficiently as possible. Contact Chi on 0411 816 876 or pandf@sjctdow.catholic.edu.au
Pick-Up procedure
Queue outside Door 4 along the ramp for pick up. Doors will open at 7:30pm for the Younger Kids disco and 9pm for the Older kids disco.
There will be class signs held up by our parent helpers. Go to this sign to locate your child. Exit through Door 1. See map diagram to visualize this route.
Parent Helpers
The P&F rely on parent helpers to ensure the smooth and safe running of the event. The only parents allowed on site will be the P&F and parent helpers.
We will need helpers for the following times.
Younger Kids Disco: 6pm-7:45pm
Older Kids Disco: 7:30pm-9:15pm
You will need a valid WWC. Please email pandf@sjctdow.catholic.edu.au with your full name, DOB, WWC and which Disco you would like to volunteer for. You can volunteer for both discos. You will receive a confirmation email regarding whether we have rostered you onto the event. Thanks in advance to all the parents who volunteer.
