Holy Thursday Staff Professional Development Day |
Dear Parents/Carers,
God, heavenly Father, look upon me and hear my prayer during this holy Season of Lent. Help me live by Your commandment of love. God of love, bring me back to You. Send Your Spirit to make me strong in faith and active in good works. May my acts of penance bring me Your forgiveness, open my heart to Your love,
and prepare me for the coming feast of the Resurrection of Jesus. Amen.
One way in which we can focus on others during this time of Lent is through outreach and charity. Each year we support the work of Caritas, a Catholic organisation who supports communities in developing countries, particularly through the fundraising drive called Project Compassion. Our students are encouraged to donate money into a Project Compassion box in their classroom. As an incentive to contribute, the class that donates the most money during Lent will get to enjoy a pizza party.
School Open Day
Today we held an Open Day for new enrolments. This initiative provided an opportunity for prospective families to have a look around our school, to meet current and ex-students, staff and parents. We believe that the people in our school community provide the best testimony of what we can offer – a caring, Christ-centred learning environment that caters for the uniqueness of each person. It was lovely to welcome the families today and to have them experience a little of the St John’s community. I was especially proud of our Year 6 Student Leaders who led the tours of the school.
I would like to pass on my thanks to the parents who helped with the welcome, especially in serving morning tea and ‘meeting and greeting’ our visitors. If you know of family or friends who were not able to attend today and would like to have a tour of our school, please encourage them to contact our office.
Parish Mass to welcome new families
This Sunday, at the 9.00am Parish Mass, Fr John is inviting all the families who are new to our school community. At the Mass he will bless the children's school bag as a symbol of them being on a 'journey' in the years in which they are part of our parish and school community. Of course, all families are welcome to be part of this celebration.
Diocesan Western Region Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to our students who competed in this carnival today. They represented our school with great pride, effort and a positive sporting attitude. Results will be provided in next week's Newsletter, especially of those who have been selected for the next level of representation.
Friday assemblies
This year, each class will be presenting some of their learning at one of our Friday assemblies, along with the normal school awards that are given. This Friday, 6 Blue will be presenting. Parents and carers are welcome to come and see some of the great things that the children have been doing in class.
Wishing you a safe and blessed week,
POLICE LIAISON TO DISCUSS ONLINE SAFETY
On Monday, 20 February, Senior Constable Michel met with our Stage 2 & 3 students to discuss online safety. It was an important opportunity for students to learn more about these issues when they are engaged in an online environment.
Our class captains have shared a few things that had an impact on them during the discussions:
Dominique & Jordan- 4 Red- It is important that we only chat online with people we know. If there are any bad comments made, screenshot them and stay safe.
Luis & Jardel- 4 Blue- We learned that cyber safety is about keeping your private information to yourself and family members. If you tell a stranger they can use the information about you. We need to be careful because there are people out there wanting the private information of others.
Lareen & Robert- 4 Gold- It was a great day because all of the kids in Year 4 went to see Senior Constable Michel to discuss how to be safe online. She explained what would be the consequences if we were bullied online and how to stop it.
Stella & Mathias- 5 Blue- On Monday, Senior Constable Michel from Campbelltown Police came and spoke to Year 5 about Cyber Safety and how we can be safe and protect ourselves when online. The most important message she shared was that we should never give out personal information and avoid uploading photos of yourself wearing your school uniform.
Miracle & Karl- 6 Red- When making friends with people online we need to be careful because they may be lying about their age and it’s not safe. When receiving a bad message from someone, screenshot and block the person so you can avoid any trouble.

A REMINDER ABOUT SAFETY IN THE CHURCH CAR PARK
The safety of all students must be of the highest priority for our community. When using the kiss and drop area of the car park in the morning, we ask you to please remember the following:
- Parents/carers must remain in the car at all times.
- Students need to exit the car via the left doors only.
- Parents and students must not access the boot.
- Bags need to be with the students, ready for a quick and smooth exit from the car.
- Students may only exit the car when it has stopped parallel to the kiss and drop sign.
We have made the turning circle wider in the morning by not allowing cars to park in the spots closest to the drop off zone. We hope this makes things easier for those driving and provides greater visibility when turning into that space.
Delays in exiting the car at the kiss and drop area causes a backup of traffic, not only in the car park, but in surrounding streets. Please continue to show courtesy to all users by following these procedures to ensure the safety of our children.
THE SEASON OF LENT
Beginning on Ash Wednesday (for the Latin Rite) Lent is:
A Time of Preparation through Prayer, Penance and Almsgiving
A Time of Remembering and Reflection
A Time of Repentance and Renewal
A Time of Forgiveness
A Time of Growth
While Lent is a time for the whole Catholic community to prepare for Easter it is also a time of preparation for those people waiting to be received into the Church through the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.
Lent is the only liturgical season that begins on a weekday. This day is marked by fasting and the use of ashes. The use of ashes is referred to in the bible, and was a gesture of penance and mourning.
A special thank you to Fr John for leading us in prayer. He mentioned the importance of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving during this important Liturgical Season.
Thank you to Mrs Hampton for coordinating our Ash Wednesday Liturgy last week. Thanks also to those teachers and students who led parts of the liturgy.
Happy Birthday to the following students and staff who are celebrating their birthday this week 26th February - 4th March

Premier's Reading Challenge 2023
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2023
This year, St John’s will be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). This is not a competition, but a challenge to each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely. At St John’s, we promote the importance of reading, and by participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, students will continue to develop their love of reading. The school library has a big selection of Premier’s Reading Challenge books on display, with the PRC ID on the book cover for students to add to their online Student Reading Record.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 teachers will read 30 books to their class during class time, and these books will be logged as a class.
Year 3 to Year 6 students will read 20 books from the PRC Booklist, however 10 of these books can be Personal Choice books. Students will be required to complete their online Student Reading Record at home, using their user ID and password, by 18th August 2023. All Year 3 to Year 6 students will receive their user ID and password in Week 7, unless the school has been contacted and the student will not be participating.
At the completion of the Premier’s Reading Challenge, all Year 3 to Year 6 students who have successfully read and logged 20 books, and all Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students who have participated, will receive a certificate. Certificates have the student's name and school printed on them. Due to child protection issues, names are no longer published on an Honour Roll on the Premier's Reading Challenge website. For further information, and to add books to the online Student Reading Record, go to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html
We hope that as many students as possible will participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please contact the school on (02)46251171 or email info@sjctdow.catholic.edu.au by Friday 3rd March 2023.
Thank you for your support and encouragement of reading
Mrs Sharon Burnett
