Dear Parents and Carers,
Lord, You send out Your Spirit to touch the hearts of all people,
so that they may believe in You and in Jesus whom You sent.
Look kindly on all candidates for Confirmation
as they listen to Your voice.
Open their hearts to Your Spirit and bring to fulfilment
the good work that You have begun in them.
Deepen their faith in the Gospel
and help them to pass it on by their example.
We pray that You will continue to guide them and sustain them.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
This evening the final celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will take place in our parish, at which a number of our students will receive the grace of God through the Holy Spirit. This brings to a culmination a period of preparation for the children and their families. Our school acknowledges the dedication of Mrs Hampton, Miss Polsen, Miss Ryan, Mrs Glen and Mrs Menzies for leading the workshop groups. Also, thanks go to the Parish Sacramental Team, Fr John, Fr Feleki and Fr Richard.
Annual Parish Celebration
You may recall that last year the Parish held a big celebration for the 200 year anniversary of the first Mass being said in the Macarthur. Following on from the success of that occasion, the parish are hosting and Annual Parish Celebration on Sunday 27 August. It will begin with Mass under the school COLA at 10.00am, followed by food stalls provided by the various cultural groups and entertainment. Some of our student are going to be involved in the Mass and the entertainment. Our school is a significant part of the parish and so all families are encouraged to join in this parish celebration.
Diocese of Wollongong
The diocese of which our school and parish belong has recently updated its information about the services that it provides. When you read through this information you may be surprised by how much the diocese is doing and its broad reach across the community. There is more than just churches and schools!
P & F Meeting
Following on from the success of the Trivia Night, you are all invited to the next P & F Meeting being held Tuesday 15 August at 6.30pm.
Wishing you a great week,
Paul Moroney
Principal
SCIENCE SPECTACULAR AT ST JOHN’S
This week we have been celebrating National Science Week. The theme in 2023 is ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries.’
Ms Afchal, the Year 6 teachers & students, have done an incredible job in preparation for our Science Spectacular.
Below are the experiments our Year 6 students have been demonstrating to the students from Kindergarten to Year 5:
Rotation 1: Sea Monkeys alive! - investigating living things (brine shrimp) under a microscope
Rotation 2: Super greenhouse - Seed Germination Experiment - different stages of seed germination
Rotation 3: Ooblex! - discovering newtonian fluid and non-newtonian fluids.
Rotation 4: Balloon chemistry - Discovering chemical reactions
Rotation 5: Lemon battery - investigating how Lemon juice acts as an electrolyte, a liquid that can conduct electricity.
Rotation 6: How do oil spills affect birds and other ocean wildlife?
Rotation 7: Chemical reactions
Rotation 8: Exploring density changes
The aim of this event was to develop a sense of curiosity about the world of Science & Technology. This has certainly been achieved so far! The technical language used by our Year 6 students, while engaging with our younger students, has demonstrated their sound knowledge of science concepts for their rotation.
A special thanks to Ms Afchal for all her planning and preparation leading up to this week. She applied for and won a special grant for our school to support the funding of our Science Spectacular. There were also many shops to visit in order to purchase the materials and equipment needed. We thank her for her commitment and dedication in making this a special week for our students and community.
We also thank Ms Parsons (Science Coordinator) at St Patrick’s Girls College, Campbelltown for loaning our school some valuable equipment, such as microscopes, alligator clips, bulbs and petri dishes.
Winners for the colouring competition will also be announced soon- an infant and primary student will win a small science pack!
We hope that many of our parents, carers and 2024 Kindergarten students will be able to attend this Friday, 11 August. Refer to the flyer below.
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
On Tuesday, 15 August, we celebrate the feast day of the Assumption. Our school community will gather together to celebrate the Eucharist in our Church. This will be the first Mass held in the church for the school prior to COVID restrictions. It will commence at 12pm. Parents and carers are invited to celebrate with us and sit at the back, on either side of the church.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, was the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her life.
By contemplating Mary in heavenly glory, we understand that the earth is not our final resting place for us either. If we live our lives in faith and goodwill, one day we will share in this same glory. The luminous sign of Our Lady taken up into Heaven shines out even more brightly during challenging times.
STUDENTS ARRIVING TO SCHOOL ON TIME
Just a reminder that students need to arrive at school before 8:45am when school commences. This is extremely important for children so they can move into class ready for learning at the start of the day. Important messages are also shared that provide information to support their learning and well being.
We understand it can be a challenge on some mornings getting organised for the school day. This is just a reminder for some parents and carers, to ensure that children do arrive at school on time. We thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Next week at St John's, the ICAS English assessment will be administered for registered students in Years 2-6
St John’s community is having a Koala Campaign which started on Monday of Week 3.
The Year 2 children are looking at how we can “Reflect God’s Goodness” by caring for God’s creation in their lessons. We are asking the families in our school if they can help our koalas in Campbeltown by donating any used, clean pillowcases, towels and small blankets or sheets and bring them to school.
The donations will be given to WIRES- people who look after injured animals, to make little pouches. Many of our native animals – especially koalas, get hit by cars at this time of year and they need helpers to look after them until they can be returned to the bush.
Your support is greatly appreciated
All welcome to attend Term 3 Parents and Friend meeting on Tuesday 15 August at 6.30pm in the tiered learning space. Online attendance is also available for those not able to make it in person. Looking forward to seeing you then.
