Dear Parents and Carers,
Lord God, may the light of this wreath be a sign of peace and tolerance to all people, who prepare for your coming. Let the truth of your Word lead us all toward your kingdom, for which we long. We ask it in the name of the one born in Bethlehem, Jesus our Lord. Amen.
This weekend we enter into the second week of advent. No doubt your home is beginning to be filled with decorations that help to highlight the period of preparation that will bring us to the joy of Christmas. Maybe your decorations include a wreath. The circular shape of the Advent wreath symbolizes God’s infinite love for us – it is never-ending. The materials of the Advent wreath similarly lead us to reflect on the everlasting nature of God; traditionally, Advent wreaths have been made of evergreen leaves, such as pine or fir, which maintain their green colour beyond the season in which they are collected.
The four candles in the wreath are not random - they have their own special significance. One candle is lit each Sunday. The first, second and fourth are purple because the colour violet is a liturgical colour that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice, and the third candle is pink and symbolises joy. Sometimes a fifth white candle is included to be lit on Christmas day.
If you don't have one already, an Advent Wreath is a special way of building up to Christmas with your children. Each Sunday you could light one of the candles and pray for something special.
Next Tuesday, we hope that you can join us for Carols Under the COLA as a way of preparing for Christmas. Details are included in the Newsletter.
The National Office for Child Safety has launched ‘One Talk at a Time’, a national awareness raising and behavioural change campaign on child sexual abuse.
One Talk at a Time aims to protect children and young people from sexual abuse by helping adults understand that child sexual abuse is preventable and encouraging them to have ongoing, proactive, preventative conversations with children, young people and other adults in their lives.
You may have already noticed or seen the campaign's 60-second advertisement. 'One Talk at a Time' was informed by a substantial research program to ensure it is effective, culturally-safe, accessible and trauma-informed. This research included research and testing with over 8,500 Australians, including the campaign's target audience, victims and survivors, child safety experts and the National Strategy's priority groups.
This campaign is a key measure under the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse 2021-2030 and fulfils a recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Swimming Carnival Results
As mentioned last week, on Friday, 24 November, our school held our annual swimming carnival at The Gordon Fetterplace Aquatic Centre, Bradbury. The event was very successful, bringing together students from Years 3 to 6 for a day filled with spirited competition and of course, lots of fun in the water!
The results from the carnival were presented at the Monday morning assembly this week. Congratulations to Therry House (Gold) on winning the Annual Swimming Carnival House Champions Trophy. The students in Therry certainly scooped the pool, gaining the most points to be crowned house champions.
Congratulations to the students below who swam exceptionally well on the day to claim age champions at our carnival. We might see one of these swimmers on the dias as part of the dolphins, a member of the Australian swimming team.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION DINNER & DISCO
The Year 6 Graduation Celebrations commenced last night with the dinner and disco at the Campbelltown Catholic Club. Congratulations to all the students on the way in which they presented themselves to celebrate in style together.
We shared a beautiful meal of chicken schnitzel, chips and salad together. Afterwards there was a special presentation of the graduation cake and an acknowledgement of the teachers who contributed towards making the night possible.
Then it was time to hit the dance floor. The majority of students then enjoyed the opportunity to bust a move with their classmates to celebrate and enjoy this special occasion.
Overall the night went exceptionally well. Feedback from our graduating students regarding last night has been a resounding 10 out of 10.
Thank you to Mrs Hampton, Mr Nash, Mr Toohey & Mrs Marten for their efforts in organising a special night for the students. Thanks also to the staff members who were able to attend and celebrate with our wonderful senior students.
MAPLE FINISHES HER WORK FOR 2023
This year Maple has continued to support the wellbeing of our students and community. She has certainly made an impact since commencing last year in Semester 2 of 2022. She has worked three days a week, engaging with particular students, visiting classrooms and being a presence on the playground. Students have also traded in their playground awards to spend time with Maple during the breaks.
Maple will resume the second week back of school in 2024.
Thank you to the core team of teachers, SSO’s and student ambassadors who have assisted Maple in making connections with the students and the broader community.

The Vinnies Return and Earn initiative is no longer continuing so the Ecology Team at St John’s will be rebranding the bins to support a non-profit charitable organisation to continue to collect and recycle suitable containers. The donations will be used to raise funds to provide fresh water for communities in the Philippines.
If you have any bottles, cans or poppers they can be placed in the blue bins at school. Our upcoming Carols Under the Cola will launch the appeal for this year. If you have any donations they can be brought on the night and placed in the bins provided.
Thank you for your support.
