Dear Parents/Carers,
Creator God,
Because of your abundant love
you chose to bring light and order into the formless void,
to create a world of unsurpassed beauty and you saw that it was good.
We ask that you continue to recreate the world with that same attentive love,
to bring light into today’s world.
Replenish our hearts so that we too can renew the face of the earth.
Amen.
I trust that you had a wonderful Easter celebration with family and friends. At our whole school Mass yesterday, Fr John reminded us that the joy and warmth of Easter should not just be restricted to that one day. It is a feeling, given to us by Jesus, that can influence our way of being each day of the year. Of course, this is challenging when we confront difficult moments. However, if we can replenish our hearts then we can be the positive influence for others in those moments.
It was wonderful to see parents and carers attend our school celebrations of Easter yesterday with the Mass, Easter Hat Parade and raffle. It is not often when Easter falls within a school term, so it was a great that so many of you took the chance to join us.
Attendance at school
As we are nearing the end of Term 1, it is timely to reflect on attendance requirements for students. Pleasingly, data is showing that the majority of students in our school have a 95-100% attendance rate. For this term, that equates to no more than 2-3 days absent. Our system of schools is espousing that this attendance rate is target for all our school communities to work toward, which would equate to no more than 10 days absent for the year.
Of course, illness is a significant reason for children to be absent, especially when there is a risk of spreading their illness with others. Families are encouraged to use student holiday times for travel to minimise absenteeism.
The learning growth of students depends on consistent and regular practice of the skills, especially in English and Mathematics. When this is disrupted by unnecessary, absences it can take a child longer to catch up on this learning. Also, the development of their social skills is also enhanced via regular attendance.
School Cross Country
As mentioned in a Compass notification yesterday, we are keeping a close eye on weather forecasts for this Friday. At this stage, they are still predicting a lot of rain, so we may need to postpone the carnival to our back-up date of Friday 12 April. A final decision will be made during tomorrow.
Wishing you a safe and blessed week,
PARENT COMMUNICATION SURVEY
Last week, a survey with parents/carers about communication between school and home was shared via Compass. We would greatly appreciate your insights into this matter. The link for the survey is also below.
Parent/Carer Communication Survey
If you are having difficulty accessing the survey, please let the office know as soon as possible and we will organise another method to collect your ideas. Thank you for your ongoing support.
EASTER CELEBRATIONS
The season of Easter, covers the fifty-day period from Easter to Pentecost. It can be seen as:
- A Time of Celebration
- A Time of Renewal
- A Time of Peace
- A Time of Promise
- A Time of New Beginnings
We hope all St John’s families had a blessed and Holy Easter last weekend.
On Tuesday, 2 April, our community gathered to celebrate the Eucharist at our Easter Mass. During his homily, Fr John spoke about this being a time for our Church to celebrate. He mentioned that we are an Easter people and for all of us to rejoice in the risen Lord. Thanks to the students who participated in the Mass with readings, processions, the liturgical movement and choir. Also thanks to Miss Costello and Ms Johnson in coordinating and preparing the students for this significant liturgy for our whole school.
In the afternoon, we celebrated with our Easter Hat Parade. The efforts the students and families went to was clearly evident with an array of stunning designs on the wide variety of unique hats. There were even some clues left by the Easter Bunny about the learning taking place in each grade. It was a great success with lots of parents and carers attending. Thanks to Miss Costello for coordinating this wonderful celebration.
Thank you to all those in the P & F for organising our Easter Raffle this term. We also thank the school community for their support in purchasing tickets. The Easter Raffle was drawn after the Easter Hat Parade. Congratulations to the thirty winners who managed to win a beautiful hamper.
POLICE LIAISON OFFICER VISITS TO DISCUSS ONLINE SAFETY
On Monday, 25 March, Senior Constable Michel met with each of our grades from Years 3-6 to discuss online safety. It was an important opportunity for students to learn more about these issues when they are engaged in an online environment.
Some of our class captains have shared a few things that had an impact on them during the discussion:
Belen Galea 5R- The police came to talk to us last week about cyber safety. Every child in the primary years has a school iPad and it is important that all children know what is wrong online and the consequences that could occur. Unfortunately cyber bullying happens almost everyday and kids must be aware of it. This talk with the police will change children’s experiences on the internet and online. We thank the police for their time to teach St. John’s children how to stay safe online.
Alessandra Villarosa 4R- Senior Constable Michel taught us how to be safe online. Just say if you have made an account and someone likes your post. If they ask for your phone number and other private information you would never give it and tell a trusted adult.
Grace Bazouni 4R- We were thankful for Senior Constable Michel to teach us all about being safe online. It was a real eye opener to find out that doing some bad stuff online can come out with some bad consequences. I think that everyone learned a good lesson about being safe online.
Dominique Bayon 5B- Last Monday, Year 5 went to the tiered learning space for an Online Safety talk with Senior Constable Michel. She told us that we need to be careful when posting pictures online and should only share pictures and information about ourselves with people we know in person. She also informed us that our online behaviour can have serious consequences such as gaol time and a criminal record.
Belle Mojica & Philo Heness 6B- On Tuesday 26th March, 2024 a senior constable visited the year 6 grade for a cyberbullying and online safety chat in the tiered learning space. The constable spoke about popular games and their age restrictions which was interesting because some of them we weren't aware of. After the discussion, the students were invited to ask questions.
Forgiveness KG- Lydia C- for showing forgiveness to her classmates when they make a mistake. 1G - Noah C - for showing others how to forgive by being kind to others. 2G - Declan R for your willingness to forgive others, just like Jesus. 3G Chloe C - for always trying to do the right thing and forgive others 4G - Jack K- For being a peacemaker within the classroom and on the playground 5G - Ava Q - For always displaying kindness and forgiveness toward your peers. 6G -Kash R - For always demonstrating kindness and forgiveness as well as patience in his interactions with others. |
