Lord, as we embark on this sacred journey of Lent, grant us the grace to draw nearer to You. Help us to use this time wisely, to reflect on Your love and mercy, and to seek Your presence in our lives. Guide us in our prayers, fasting, and almsgiving, that they may deepen our relationship with You. Grant us the strength to confront our weaknesses and the courage to turn away from sin. May this season of Lent be a time of renewal and transformation, bringing us closer to Your heart. Amen.
Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the commencement of Lent, a period of time which leads up to Easter. All of us at St John's had the opportunity today to be marked with an 'ash cross' on our foreheads. This ancient ritual is a symbolism of penance and a reminder that we are 'of the earth, a part of God's creation.'
During Lent we are all encouraged to reflect on our lives, and on our relationship with God. We are encouraged to cleanse our hearts and focus on what is important, through prayer, fasting and caring for those in need. I pray that during this time as we journey toward Easter, that you find times of stillness to consider parts of your life which need renewal.
Giving to those in need, or almsgiving, is traditionally a significant part of Lenten practices. Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining our two school captains, Amelia and Kaylee, at the launch of Project Compassion. This annual fundraising activity supports the work of Caritas, a Catholic organisation that supports communities in developing countries. You may want to visit their website to find out more about their work.
I would like to thank the P & F for organising the pancakes for Shrove Tuesday yesterday. They were certainly busy making more than 700 pancakes (surely that is some sort of record!). Sincere thanks to the parents able to help.
Last Sunday Fr John led a beautiful parish Mass to welcome new students and their families to our parish community. He reminded those present that in a faith community it is important that our words and actions must match the values of our faith as Jesus has taught us - values such as welcoming, tolerance, love and forgiveness. I hope our new families get to experience this as they become part of our community.
School Cross Country
You are reminded that our school's Cross Country Carnival is being held next Friday 14 March at Hurley Park. Specific details have been provided via Compass and our Newsletters. While the focus of our sport carnivals is to select a representative team, they also provide a wonderful opportunity to build 'Colour House spirit' and to have children participate in as many activities as possible.
All of our carnivals rely on parents volunteers. If you haven't done so already, please contact the office if you are able to help on the day.
CHURCH CAR PARK
We should all be aware of the importance regarding the safety of our children and families in the church car park.
As we all know, the church car park serves as a crucial space for dropping-off in the morning and pick-up after dismissal. However, recent observations have raised concerns regarding safety practices, particularly regarding double parking.
Double parking not only obstructs the flow of traffic but also poses significant safety risks for pedestrians, especially children, who may need to navigate between parked vehicles. Additionally, it hampers access to the exit and complicates the movement of other vehicles within the car park.
We respectfully ask parents and carers to please refrain from double parking under any circumstances. If the car park is full upon your arrival, we encourage you to consider alternative parking arrangements in the streets nearby. If you are able to do so perhaps come a little bit after 3pm as there may be spaces available then.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter. If you have any questions or concerns regarding parking or safety in the church car park, please do not hesitate to contact us.
THE PARISH WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
The St. John's Parish, under the guidance of Fr. John Ho, warmly welcomed new students and families on Sunday, 2 March. The event served as a special occasion to integrate newcomers into the parish community and bless the school bags of students for the academic year ahead.
The welcome of new students and families, coupled with the blessing of school bags, served as a poignant reminder of the communal spirit and spiritual foundation that defines the parish of St. John's, Campbelltown. Under the leadership of Fr. John, the parish remains committed to fostering a nurturing environment where faith, fellowship, and education intertwine to enrich the lives of all its members.
LENT- PROJECT COMPASSION
During Lent, we are called to pray, fast and participate in almsgiving. As part of our Catholic Social Teaching we are obliged to give preferential treatment to the poor.
We thank students and families in anticipation of the contributions they will make to Project Compassion during this liturgical season.
Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion provides those less fortunate than us, the opportunity to learn new skills, enables them to move away from dependence and debt and assists them to become self-supporting. We are extremely grateful for the work of this Catholic organisation.
NAPLAN
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
(NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024)
Our Years 3 & 5 students will complete NAPLAN over the next fortnight. The schedule is below:
Writing |
Wednesday, 12 March |
Reading |
Thursday, 13 March |
Language Conventions |
Monday, 17 March |
Numeracy |
Tuesday, 18 March |
With the assistance of parents and carers, we would ask that the children’s iPad’s be fully charged on the morning of these days. They also require their headphones as well.
Tomorrow the students in Years 3 and 5 will sit a practice tests so they are familiar with how to answer the questions and the online layout of NAPLAN.
We are thinking of our Year 3 & 5 students over the coming week as they demonstrate their knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy.
