Take us out of our comfort, God, in the wilderness of your way where we might meet those in need and share our gifts with each other in mutual compassion and love, and thus, meet you on this holiest of ground.
Amen
Last Sunday’s Gospel reading at Mass saw Jesus enter the wilderness where he was tempted by the devil. Of course, natural wilderness for those of us who live in urban environments, are such places. For those who live on country our cities and urban areas are places of wilderness for them. The wilderness is a metaphor for a place or time where things are challenging or testing. In wilderness we are faced with the unfamiliar and situations which often require more than we might initially have the capacity for. It is in the wilderness that we often have to practise faith, for it is trust in God and reliance on God that is required.
Wilderness times are often testing times because they present us with struggles and discomfort. The temptation is to give up or take the easy way out or leave it to others. Jesus faced such a time after he was baptised, but we can see that throughout his ministry he was almost always in a wilderness. How could he not be as God incarnate, having to deal for the first time with all the challenges of being human?
Lent is a reminder for us of the need for wilderness. There may be specific times we are led into specific wilderness times for intense formation, but in Lent we remember the call to be sent out into the wilderness of life to join God in God’s mission.
School Cross Country Carnival
This Friday is our school’s Cross Country Carnival at Hurley Park. The carnival has two purposes: to select our representative team to compete at the Diocesan Carnival; and, to bring the whole school community together in a spirit of sportsmanship. The staff who have been responsible for organising the day have been working hard to ensure the children have a great day.
The children will be involved in activities for the whole carnival. While it may be tempting to have your child with you during the day, we ask for your support in ensuring they stay with their age group for the entirety of the carnival. That way they get to enjoy the full experience of the carnival.
Any parents who are able to help on the day are asked to arrive between 8.45-9.00am
Staff Professional Development Day
You are reminded that our next Staff Professional Development Day is being held on Monday 31 March. Students do not attend school on this day.
MAPLE SUPPORTING STUDENT WELL BEING
Maple continues to work hard supporting the wellbeing of students at St John’s. She has visited many classrooms, interacting with lots of students. To the credit of the children they continue to follow our three expectations:
- Say hello to the person and not the dog
- Make space for Maple
- Keep moving, don’t stop and stare
Maple has supported students in a variety of ways and continues to provide positive experiences during her interactions.
NAPLAN
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students will participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning at school.
(NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024)
Our Years 3 & 5 students will complete NAPLAN over the next week. The schedule is below:
Writing |
Wednesday, 12 March |
Reading |
Thursday, 13 March |
Language Conventions |
Monday, 17 March |
Numeracy |
Tuesday, 18 March |
With the assistance of parents and carers, we would ask that the children’s iPad’s be fully charged on the morning of these days. They also require their headphones as well.
We are thinking of our Year 3 & 5 students over the coming week as they demonstrate their knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy.

School student travel information for parents and students |
School Travel Passes Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible. In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs. Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass. |
Terms of Use |
Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use . This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times. All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel. |
